Schools Using Popular Athletes More?

According to CNBC’s Darren Rovell:
The Chronicle of Higher Education is reporting that the NCAA has a proposal on the table that would allow schools to use their popular athletes more. I think it should happen in exchange for those athletes getting their rightful share in jersey royalties.
I would add that it’s probably time to reevaluate how schools use athletes period. Especially if they’re going to use them more. Does anyone know how schools can get away with using images and likenesses of former athletes (like they do in commercials, game programs, etc) without paying for them? It seems like former athletes should at least get paid something for this. What do you think?

No, they should not get paid for it. College sports is the last frontier our country has for mostly-clean sportsmanship. For most players the money goes to their head and they turn into jackasses. If it aint broke why break it?

While an athlete is in school, in terms of royalties/ getting paid, they are the legal equivalent of a retarded eight year old girl. they have no rights, even over their own likeness, and are not entitled to the fruits of any of their own labors. People need to stop thinking that college athletes are any different from high school athletes. Students and young people first, little kids who happen to play some kind of game second.

Joe and Mobert – I agree that they shouldn’t get paid while in college, but why not when they graduate? I just don’t think schools should have a license to use their images/likenesses forever.
Also, I agree that most college athletes should be thought of as students first, but the reality is that athletes from the revenue-generating sports (football and basketball) are pretty much athletes first and students second. The amount of money they bring to the schools is ridiculous, and this money carries over into other sports and academics. For example, a good football team attracts good faculty, students, alumni donations, etc.
These tier-1 college athletes bring in the money, and thus are more like professional athletes than college students, with the exception that they don’t get anything for their efforts– yeah, they get an education (if they even graduate, that is), but compared to the millions of dollars they bring in, that is peanuts.
Still, I’m not advocating paying college athletes (that is a whole separate discussion)—I just don’t think schools should be able to use their image/likenesses forever.
