@Peter thanks for your thoughts - providing interactive features such as the ones you mentioned should definitely be something leagues and teams give fans these days.

@Mike - agree 100% that their events are awesome and there is a big opportunity for them to really show how great they are.

@Dan - thanks for the shout out.

Jason,

Very true on your comments. How about that nice looking Olympic blog though? Whoever helped come up with that idea must be a genius. I'd hire those people to run my sites!

Anyway, I've worked with the AVP in the past and they have really nice people at the top and their events are awesome. I wasn't a huge volleyball fan, but I had a ton of fun at their Belmar event last year. I agree that social networking is the way for them to go because if they could get more people involved, I think they'd get sucked in like I did.

Good topic as there have been a lot of conversations lately about using online video to market sports and sports-related organizations. Makes sense – sports is all about action and nothing does it better than video. However, sports associations and teams can do more with their web video by building communities around content. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are a great way to generate initial exposure. But to take your marketing efforts further, you also need to drive traffic to your site. So, publish video on your website, provide interactive features like commenting, voting, sharing, live chat and more, allow user-generated uploads, start a blog, create a forum... You can then monetize your sports community by attracting sponsors and advertisers who want to reach this audience.

We just did a blog post on this topic: http://endavomediablog.typepad.com/endavo_media_blog/2009/05/small-sports-teamsleagues-huge-opportunity-to-use-online-video.html
