I absolutely agree, it is so important for brands and businesses to listen to their fans as they can ultimately influence their audience, and by monitoring what they say you create the chance to respond. Dialogix is a greatsocial media monitoring tool (based in Australia) that can monitor your brand, competitors and entire industry across all social media platforms so you never miss another conversation.

with 25% of people out there in Web 2.0 land involved in a social network, it is surprising that all major sports programs would not at least have an intern focused on a social network presence. Well laid out article. I think it's here to stay which of course why I'm in the space at http://www.showoffsports.com. Your comments are welcome! Great site, Jason.

I thought this was one of the most insightful pieces I've yet read about social media. I've been trying to get an initial set of structured comments together on how people in sport are using social media as a contribution to a new student text book for sport marketing courses and am finding it hard to separate the generic hype about social media (Pr2.0 stuff) from sports where there are practical examples that are up and running and delivering results, and from which students and prospective managers can learn. I've been in touch with Pat Coyle and he was very insghtful too, alrhough I think he might agree we are at the early stages of learning. The question I guess I have is whether this is an investment in relationship building - which is PR territory, or whether there is a serious marketing aim at monetising the ability to collect data and segment it, and then sell it on to advertisers and sponsors - or, both? :-)

Social media has become more empowering for fans which makes the control of communications a lot more difficult for PR agencies.
